This preserves Miyazaki's original art because it doesn't have to be flipped for English reading order. The story proceeds in the traditional manga/Japanese right-to-left reading order. This edition has clear, dark printing, so I could study the intricate details in landscapes, backgrounds, and battle scenes. I enjoyed reading in this large format (10 x 7 inches), making it even easier to pore over Miyazaki's art and narrative. Lovers of manga and anime can appreciate the fundamental influence of this opus on Japanese manga in so much work that followed. Those who like the film will want to deepen their acquaintance with Miyazaki by reading this longer, deeper story. Each event she participates in turns out to be indispensable to a future turn in the story. She is a gentle-natured but strong-willed and self-propelling heroine, who looks and leaps simultaneously. As the story goes on, surprising alliances form and Nausicaä is a turnkey for many events. When Nausicaä's land is overtaken by imperial soldiers seeking an item of great strategic value, Nausicaä and her allies manage to both oppose them and to discover and resist their misguided attacks against the very land itself. Here, the lead character, Nausicaä, has the title of princess but the spirit simultaneously of an adventurer and of a nurturer of both people and all nature. Miyazaki is known for creating strong young heroines and ecological story lines. It is a bit like comparing Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring to the complete Lord of the Rings. Miyazaki wrote the manga over 12 years he wrote the Japanese film and it was released in the early years while writing the manga, so when the film was completed, the manga's story was not yet complete. Many American readers feel familiar with the story from the English-language movie released in 2005, but the movie only covers approximately 210 pages of the 865 pages of these books, plus the movie's plot is much simpler and more condensed than the approximately first ¼ of the manga series (or this boxed set). The story is now well known, following Miyazaki's rise to fame as the writer/director of animated films such as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. Nausicaä's long, epic story was earlier published in seven softcover volumes, collecting the manga series that Miyazaki wrote back in his early days in animation. This edition comes as two large hardcover books in a slipcover box, from Viz Media. Manga lovers can enjoy Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki, in a beautiful, satisfying, indulgent new boxed set.
